The Kano State House of Assembly (KNHA) has called on the state government to strengthen the enforcement of the Child Protection Law, with particular focus on tackling child trafficking and forced labor.
This was sequel to deliberations during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Alhaji Jibril Isma’il Falgore.
In a motion, moved by the member representing Madobi Constituency, Alhaji Sulaiman Mukhtar Ishaq, he lamented the increasing cases of underage children being trafficked from his constituency and neighboring local government areas to serve as domestic workers, where they often suffer molestation, hardship, and denial of access to education.
He cited the case of a young girl who disappeared after being sent to work as a maid, stressing the urgent need for the government to either review the existing child protection law or establish an agency dedicated to safeguarding children from all forms of exploitation.
After deliberation, the Assembly adopted the motion and urged the state government to ensure full enforcement of the Child Protection Law.
In another development, KNHA has also called on the state government to provide immediate relief to victims of heavy rainfall and windstorms in Rano Local Government Area, which claimed lives and destroyed more than 300 houses and farmlands.
Mover of the motion who doubles as member representing Rano Constituency, Ibrahim Muhammad highlighted the devastating impact of the disaster, which also led to the death of human and livestock.
The lawmakers unanimously resolved that the state government should intervene and support the affected communities.
Similarly, the member representing Minjibir Constituency, Abdulhamid Abdul, presented a motion of urgent public importance seeking government assistance for flood victims in Kunya and Kazawa communities, where an Islamiyya school and a mosque were washed away.
He called for a committee to be set up to assess the damages and forward reports to relevant agencies for necessary action.
After necessary legislative action the house adopted the motion and urged KNSG to do the needful to assist those affected in Minjibir.
In another motion, the member representing Kura/Garin Malam Constituency, Zakariyya Alhassan Ishaq, urged the government to renovate Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS) Garun Malam, which was built during the first tenure of Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso.
He lamented that the classrooms were dilapidated and overcrowded, discouraging student enrollment and attendance.
The motion was seconded by the legislators where the House resolved that urgent renovation works be carried out at the school to restore conducive learning conditions.
