Vice President Kashim Shettima has presided over the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Thursday.

The governor of Kwara State and chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, AbdulRahman AbdulRazak, Imo State and chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Hope Uzodimma; and governors from Zamfara, Jigawa, Lagos, Anambra, Gombe, Imo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Benue, and Ondo states were also present, along with the Rivers State Sole Administrator, who is attending the meeting.

The National Economic Council (NEC) of Nigeria is a constitutionally established body that plays a central role in shaping the country’s economic direction. It was created under the 1999 Constitution (Section 153(1) and Part I, Third Schedule, Paragraphs 18 & 19) to advise the President on the economic affairs of the Federation and to coordinate development policies across federal, state, and local governments.

The council is chaired by the Vice President and includes all thirty-six state governors, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and other co-opted officials.

Beyond economic planning, the NEC oversees and approves the government’s annual borrowing plan and debt management strategy, which are executed by the Debt Management Office.
