Kebbi State Government has called on federal government to quickly intervene by addressing the issue of the recent roads and bridges collapsed across the state due to heavy downpour.
The State Commissioner of Information Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed Birnin Kebbi announced this shortly after visiting four local government areas of the state affected by the flood.
Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed explained that, the tragedy occurred following a heavy rainfall that coursed flooding across the state and damaged many roads especially trunk “A” roads which are the federal government roads, farm lands and many houses.
He said that, major bridges have completely collapsed with farmlands submerged, almost cutting off Kebbi State from other parts of the country.
According to him, farmlands, roads, and bridges were either damaged or washed away, preventing the transportation of food to markets, thereby threatening the country’s food chain as Kebbi remains the major food basket of the nation.
Commenting on the issue at Fana, the District Head, Alhaji Muhammad Sani Fana, appreciated the Governor’s effort for promptly dispatching the Committee to access and forward their findings for necessary actions.
He lamented that the town was cut off by the flood, saying that he led his people to create temporary passage for pedestrians and light vehicles, adding that, the governor has given them bags of rice and 50 million naira to cushion their hardship.
The places visited for the first time by the committee members include, Makera/Kangiwa Road in Birnin Kebbi local government area, Bunza /Natsini Road and Maidahini/Bunza Road, in Bunza local government area, then Fana/Dakingari Road, in Dandin local government area.
Others are Aljannare in Suru Local Government Area and Gwadangwaji quarters in the state capital were erosion is attacking the environmental.
Some commuters interviewed express hope that, the federal government will support the effort of the governor to quickly award the contract of the affected roads as some explained that the were falled into the river and hooked up for seven days.
