A Katsina-based Islamic scholar, Imam Abubakar Sa’id, has berated public office holders over the widespread hunger and malnutrition, particularly among children in the state.

Citing a Medecins Sans Frontiers report which revealed that 652 children in the state had died of malnutrition in the first six months of 2025, the Imam in his Friday sermon described the situation as alarming.

“In a country where political office holders live in extravagant luxury, it is embarrassing for state and local governments to allow citizens to die of hunger, the country is very rich, if we manage our resources well citizens will not be dying of hunger and malnutrition.

“Doctors without Borders reported that within just six months, 652 children died of hunger in the state, this is alarming and it should not be allowed to happen again, this state has enough resources to fight hunger and malnutrition”, he said.

Imam Sa’id who noted that the situation warrants an emergency response, urged the state government and its thirty four local councils to commence the distribution of food items to less privileged households and open feeding points to assist malnourished persons.

He also appealed to the state government to launch a comprehensive poverty eradication program, leveraging on the huge grants that accrue to it since the removal of fuel subsidy in 2023.

The cleric admonished public office holders to regard public office as a sacred trust for which they will be interrogated on the Day of Judgement.
