The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned the increasing number of killings in Plateau State.

A faction of the association from 19 northern states is demanding justice for the victims.

The chairman of the CAN faction, Yakubu Pam, also underscored the need to end the needless and gruesome killings in Plateau State and other areas.

In a statement, CAN described the killings as barbaric and senseless.

According to CAN, the attacks and killings of innocent Nigerians were a gross violation of the sanctity of human life and a threat to the peace and unity of the country at large.

The association underscored the need for all stakeholders to unite against the cycle of violence that has plagued Plateau for decades.

In March 2025, Plateau State experienced a series of violent attacks resulting in significant loss of life and displacement.

Between late March and early April 2025, armed assailants launched coordinated attacks on several communities in Plateau State, notably in the Bassa and Mangu local government areas. These assaults led to the deaths of at least 52 individuals and displaced over 2,000 residents

The violence is part of a longstanding pattern of conflict in the region, often attributed to disputes over land and resources between farming and herding communities.

During an early morning attack on Monday, April 14, 2025, many were reportedly killed in the Zike community, Kimakpa, in the Kwall district of the Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attack is coming less than two weeks after 52 persons were killed in some communities of the Bokkos Local Government Area.

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the attacks, describing them as “coordinated crimes sponsored by conflict merchants.”

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has directed security agencies to fish out the masterminds of the cycle of killings in the state.
