African Agricultural Technology Foundation, AATF has donated solar powered coldroom and some facilities to Institute for Agricultural Research to support its breeding program strengthen the capacity of the scientists involved in the production of seeds.
The Director Programmes development of African Agricultural technology Foundation, AATF, Dr Emmanuel Okogbenin stated this at the official handing over of some facilities at the institute for Agricultural Research, Ahmadu Bello University, in Zaria.
The Director said the facilities provided by the AATF includes newly upgraded green House facility equipped with cutting age technology aimed at revolutionalizing seed storage and production.
He added that the upgraded green house which is powered by 100KVA solar system stands as a testament to AATF dedication to harnessing renewable energy sources for the betterment of agricultural practices.
Dr Emmanuel said another facility provided includes cooling units and a 30KVA solar powered cold storage facility to preserve the quality and viability of seeds during storage to ensure optimal conditions for seed preservation and safeguarding the genetic integrity of the agricultural heritage.
He said AATF also installed solar system powered irrigation facilities covering two hectares of land to ensure all year round seed production and empowering the researchers in the institute with the tools needed to meet the growing demands of a dynamic agricultural landscape.
The Director extended his appreciation to the funding partners, Bill and Melinda Gate Foundation who has made the project a reality.
He also urged institute for Agricultural Research to allow the upgraded facility to serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration and a guide towards a future where food security is not just a dream but a reality for all.
Also Speaking, the Executive Director, Institute for Agricultural Research, Professor Ado Yusuf thanked the management of AATF and their funding partners, Bill and Melinda Gate foundation for providing the facilities to the institute and assured that this will mark the beginning of another phase of Relationship for the good of humanity.
He assured that the institute’s scientists will use the facilities towards enhancing agricultural practices especially when it comes to providing quality seeds for the farmers for food security in the country.
