House of Representatives is to pass the Electoral Offences Act before the culmination of the 9th Assembly.

Speaker of the Houser Femi Gbajabiamila, announced this in a remark to welcome members back from the governorship and state Assembly elections recess.

Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, explained that the Act was necessary in ensuring full enforcement against individuals and organisations whose violations of the nation’s electoral laws undermine the constitution and threaten Nigeria’s democracy.

He said a system of vigorous prosecution and punishment of electoral offenders would help build confidence in the country’s elections and serve as deterrent to others in the future.

The Speaker maintained that an objective assessment of the recent elections would show remarkable improvements from prior outings.

He emphasised that the 9th National Assembly had been particularly instrumental in improving elections process through the use of technology to facilitate voter accreditation and transmission of results.

He urged INEC to collaborate with stakeholders to conduct a meticulous assessment of the election process.
