Activities leading up to the 2023 polls will reach a critical juncture in the next 19 days, when the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC will release the final list of candidates for the elections, as required by the Electoral Act of 2022, as well as the timetable and schedule of activities.

Political party public campaigns will begin in September, according to INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu, at a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja titled; Conducting Elections in a Volatile Security Environment.

He said it was imperative to foster peace during the electoral campaign, due to the volatile security situation in parts of the country.

The  Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office FCDO’s Development Director, Mr. Chris Pycroft, has stated the office’s willingness to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to guarantee peaceful elections in 2023.

Ms. Idayat Hassan, the Country Director for the Center for Democracy and Development CDD, stated that the purpose of the meeting was to critically examine the nature of conflicts that exist in the country as well as the role that stakeholders can play in the prevention of conflicts.

The event brought together security professionals, election officials, and Civil Society Organizations.

On February 25, 2023, voters will head to the polls to choose a president and vice president.

There will also be elections for the House of Representatives and the Senate. State elections will take place two weeks later, on March 11.

The winners of the election will have their inauguration on May 29th, 2023, which was formerly known as Democracy Day.
