Borno state government has charged the media to promote reconciliation in their reportage to achieve sustainable peace in the state.
Commissioner for Information and Culture Alhaji Baba Kura Jatau gave the charge at a two-day orientation training on social reconciliation, reintegration and resettlement of repentant armed groups to host communities in Maiduguri.
Represented by the permanent secretary Malam Garba Chibok, the Commissioner said the workshop is aimed at broadening the knowledge of journalists on principles and skills of reporting conflict and related matters.
According to him, the ministry had launched public information campaign to enlighten citizens on the need to embrace peace and reconciliation among victims of insurgency.
Commissioner for Women Affairs Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo represented by a Director in the ministry Malam Baba Ali Mustapha described the training as timely, as the state government is transiting to the recovery phase.
She said the ministry has supported vulnerable people including women and children who are victims of insurgency.
In a presentation on principles and guidelines for reporting children, UNICEF Communication and Advocacy specialist Panchanan Achari urged journalists to always respect the dignity and rights of children in their reports.
The training was organised by Borno state government with support of UNICEF, International Organization for Migration IOM and United Nations Development Programme.
