Traders at Kantin kwari market, Kano municipal local government area, have decried the destruction of properties due to flooding.
Radio Nigeria’s correspondent who went round the market observed that many traders were seen evacuating clothing materials from their shops.
Report indicates that, the flooding occured after a heavy rainfall on wednesday night as most of the drainages in the market were blocked.
Some of the traders who spoke to Radio Nigeria attributed the disaster to lack of drainages, building on water ways as well the new flyover constructed near the market.
They appealed to the government to come to their aid as they have lost goods worth millions of naira.
Comrade Balarabe Tatari, chairman of kwari small scale and medium scale traders association, spoke extensively on how they predicted the occurence of such disasters when new buildings were constructed at layin Ta’Anbo and layin Bayajidda.
He maintained that, all efforts by the association proved abortive, saying that lack of transportation system and water channels within the market has contributed to flooding and other environmental hazards.
Alhaji Balarabe charged government and relevant stakeholders to assist those affected and take the necessary action to mitigate future occurence.
Meanwhile, the managing director Kantin kwari management board, Alhaji Abba Muhammad Bello has denied any blockage of water ways by the buildings , saying that some drainages were temporarily closed due to ongoing construction at the market.
He stressed that the board would submit a comprehensive report to the government for proper action.
Recall that, in August 2021, traders at Kantin Kwari market staged a peaceful protest to express their dissatisfaction over a building been constructed at Layin Ta Anbo within the market.
They pointed out that Layin Ta Anbo is one of the routes used for transportion of goods and services within the market and also serve as a channel connecting drainages.
