National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has charged Kano state government to map out laws and policies to guide family life.

The State Coordinator, Alhaji Shehu Abdullahi made the call during an exclusive interview with Radio Nigeria’s correspondent in Kano.

According to him, the commission received a total number of 636 complaints out of which 402 are on abandonment of family responsibilities and 130 cases on domestic violence from January to June 2022.

The state coordinator noted that custody of children, unlawful detention and arrest, inheritance are some of the complaints recieved by the national human rights commission Kano office.

Alhaji Shehu explained that the commission had completed 602 cases out of the 636 received in the last six months.

He maintained that if not properly addressed, abandonment of family responsibilities leads to crimes due to broken homes and lack of good moral upbringing.

The coordinator noted that,the marriage institution was in disarray, families are not united while children are mostly affected by the disputes associated with broken homes.

“Domestic violence involves wife battery, child labour and cases where husband’s report their wives for molesting them”

Alhaji Shehu said NHRC in collaboration with state agencies,non governmental organizations, security and paramilitary agencies are working tirelessly to mitigate societal problems and create an enabling environment to ensure speedy dispensation of justice.

He said the commission of part of committees that protects human rights in the state which includes justice and policy reform committees among others.

“Complaints on criminal aspects are referred to the Nigerian police force and other relevant security agencies”

The coordinator advised Kano state house of assembly to expedite action on the speedy passage of the Kano state child protection bill which would go a long way in reducing all forms of oppression aginst children.

Radio Nigeria reports that the national human rights commission is saddled with responsibilities of recieving complaints from the general public on human rights violations.
