National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria-NUTGTWN say students largely from working class and poor families have remained at home for more than four months following the strike action embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU.
In the spirit of Eid el Kabir celebration, the Union is calling on the Federal Government to urgently end incessant strike actions by implementing agreements freely entered into with ASUU and other unions in the education sector.
This was the thrust of a statement jointly signed and issued to newsmen in Kaduna by President of the Union, John Adaji and Acting General Secretary, Ali Baba on the occasion of Eid el Kabir.
The statement frowns at the continous interruption of academic activities through avoidable strike actions that poses serious threat to the future of Nigerian students.
It says once an agreement is signed, such must be binding on all parties stressing that acting contrary to the terms of collective bargaining is a violation that is injurious to industrial relations.
The statement further condemns the no work-no pay policy imposed by the Federal Government as it will be counter productive.
The statement commends the untiring effort of the Nigeria Labour Congress-NLC led by Comrade Ayuba Wabba and other concerned citizens who have been working to resolve the lingering crisis in the education sector.
Meanwhile, the textile union plans to mobilise members nationwide in compliance with the resolution of the National Executive Council of the NLC for a solidarity strike action in support of affiliate unions in the education sector.
