Twenty nine people have drowned to death following a boat capsized in Shagari Local Government Area of of Sokoto state.

Confirming the incident, the chairman of the local council Alhaji Aliyu Dantani said local divers who were mobilized to search for the remaining victims had succeeded in rescuing five victims alive out of the dam.

He explained that the total number of passengers in the boat was not known, while twenty nine corpses including twenty three female and six male had so far been recovered.

Alh. Aliyu Dantani regretted that the incident occurred in late hours of Tuesday evening, when the boat was trying to cross over the dam to the next village known as Maganawa.

The Chairman who attended the burial rites of the deceased victims, cautioned the inhabitants of the area to be mindful of using local boat while crossing the dam.
