Nasarawa State Government has confirmed the death of over 59 people due to the Cholera outbreak in the state.
Director of Public Health, State Ministry of Health, Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Alhassan who gave the figure in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Lafia, Nasarawa State capital explained that, since the outbreak of cholera in the state less than 6 months ago, a total of 892 cases had been recorded with 59 deaths.
He stated that the disease had been recorded in 8 local government areas; Doma, Lafia, Wamba, Kokona, Obi, Nasarawa, Toto and Karu.
The Director pointed out that most of the communities that recorded the disease practice open defecation and lack portable drinking water.
Dr Ibrahim Alhassan, however, explained that the state government had taken proactive measures to check further spread of the disease such as initiating a multi-sectoral approach to expand sensitisation campaigns and identification of the affected communities to provide them with motorised boreholes among others.
