National Economic Council (NEC) has endorsed a 90-day economic action plan aimed at reducing the cost of living, improving food affordability, attracting investment and accelerating projects that directly benefit Nigerians.
The decision was taken at the Council’s 161st meeting, chaired virtually by Vice President Kashim Shettima, following a presentation by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele.
The plan focuses on food affordability, tax harmonisation, completion of key projects, removal of investment barriers and targeted household support.
NEC also approved a national dashboard to monitor projects and promote transparency in the use of funds realised from fuel subsidy removal.
Vice President Shettima urged governors to ensure that the benefits of President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms translate into improved living conditions, including affordable transportation, better healthcare, employment opportunities and greater financial security.
On transportation, the Council resolved to establish a joint financing framework for the deployment of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles, directing relevant authorities to work with transport operators to ensure that savings translate into lower fares for commuters.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, briefed the Council on Nigeria’s response to the reported Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory.
He expressed confidence in the country’s capacity to contain the situation and urged states to strengthen their preparedness and response mechanisms.
NEC also directed states to intensify polio eradication efforts through improved immunisation, adequate funding and stronger security coordination, particularly in areas affected by insecurity.
On livestock development, the Council reaffirmed its commitment to collaboration between federal and state governments to unlock the sector’s potential for job creation, economic growth and improved livelihoods.
The Council stressed that effective implementation of the decisions would be critical to ensuring that economic reforms deliver practical benefits to Nigerians.
