The Kaduna State Government has intensified stakeholder consultations on its proposed Kaduna Connect Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project and broader urban transport reforms, engaging the Zazzau Emirate in Zaria.
The meeting, held at the Emir’s Palace, brought together officials of the Kaduna State Transport Regulatory Authority (KADSTRA) and the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli.
It forms part of ongoing efforts to secure stakeholder input and foster collaboration for the successful implementation of the state’s transport transformation agenda.
Leading the delegation, KADSTRA Director General, Engr. Inuwa Ibrahim, presented an overview of the Kaduna Connect BRT project.
He described it as a strategic initiative aimed at improving urban mobility, boosting economic productivity, and addressing transportation challenges across the state.
The engagement aligns with the broader transport reform agenda of the state government under Governor Uba Sani, which prioritises inclusive, affordable, and well-regulated urban mobility.
Authorities say the consultations reflect a deliberate and participatory approach to developing sustainable transport solutions.
The Director General noted that the project is expected to be the first Bus Rapid Transit system in Northern Nigeria and the second in the country, positioning Kaduna as a leading transport hub.
He also emphasised the importance of the Emirate’s support, highlighting the role of traditional institutions in mobilising public acceptance and ensuring the success of government initiatives. According to him, the project is being developed with the support of internationally recognised consultants under structured technical and project management frameworks.
In addition to the BRT system, the state government is considering complementary transport projects, including proposed light rail corridors covering about 30 kilometres from Maraban Rido to Rigachikum and 20 kilometres from Rigasa to Millennium City, as well as a planned monorail route from Gwargwaje through Kofar Doka to Shika in Giwa Local Government Area.
In his remarks, the Emir of Zazzau commended the state government’s efforts to improve the transport sector, including the introduction of subsidised transport services and infrastructure such as the Kakuri Bus Terminal.
He expressed optimism that the reforms would restore and surpass Kaduna’s past transport efficiency.
The Emir also stressed the need for sustainable and inclusive transport systems, urging the government to ensure the continuity of the subsidised transport scheme to ease the burden on residents amid current economic challenges.
He further called for stronger regulation of commercial transport operators to enhance safety and reduce accidents, while endorsing rail-based transport as a safe and efficient alternative for urban mobility.
Responding to questions, the KADSTRA Director General said plans to expand the subsidised transport scheme to areas such as Zaria and Kafanchan would depend on the availability of supporting infrastructure, including CNG refuelling facilities.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding access and sustaining impactful transport initiatives.
The meeting ended with the presentation of the Kaduna Connect BRT project document to the Emir for further review and a reaffirmation of commitment by both parties to the success of the state’s transport modernisation efforts.
