Workers in Kwara State have joined their counterparts across the country to commemorate the 2026 workers Day.

Addressing the mammoth crowd at the Kwara state Stadium Complex in Ilorin, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, commended workers for their resilience.

Governor Abdulrazaq who was represented by the Acting Head of Service, Olufunke Shittu said his administration accords workers’ welfare top priority which necessitated actions, including payment of N30,000 peculiar allowances for workers among others.

He assured that his administration would continue to provide necessary incentives for workers in the state.

For his part , the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC,Kwara state chapter , Comrade Muritala Olayinka, described this year’s May Day theme, “Insecurity and Poverty: The Bane of Decent Work,” as a true reflection of the harsh realities confronting Nigerian workers.

Comrade Olayinka lamented that the worsening insecurity has made it increasingly dangerous for workers to move freely, stressing that many can no longer walk safely to their workplaces.

He warned that the situation not only threatens lives but also undermines productivity and economic stability.

Comrade Olayinka noted that poor wages compound the crisis, arguing that any worker whose earnings cannot adequately support their family is effectively denied dignity in labour.

The labour leader cautioned that the patience of Nigerian workers is wearing thin.

He affirmed that the labour movement remains resolute in defending workers through sustained and lawful struggle, particularly in the face of rising insecurity and economic hardship.
