President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to serving Nigerians with renewed determination as lawmakers resumed plenary after the Christmas and New Year recess.
Akpabio made the pledge while welcoming his colleagues back to the chamber and condoling the family of Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North and died during the recess.
He expressed optimism that senators had returned more focused and better prepared to address national challenges and deliver more effective legislative service.
The Senate President noted that Nigeria continued to face economic pressures, security challenges and growing social demands, stressing that lawmakers had remained engaged and hopeful despite the difficulties.
Akpabio commended the ongoing military collaboration between Nigeria and the United States in the fight against terrorism, describing the partnership as vital to strengthening national security and regional stability.
He also expressed sympathy to families affected by insecurity across the country, noting that security concerns directly impact lives, homes and future prospects.
The Senate President urged lawmakers to respond urgently to a United Nations warning that up to 35 million Nigerians could face hunger this year, calling for stronger legislative and oversight actions to boost food security and protect vulnerable citizens.
As political activities gradually intensify, Akpabio cautioned political actors to be guided by conscience, civility and patriotism, warning that Nigeria’s unity and stability must not be sacrificed for ambition.
Earlier in the session, the Senate read four executive communications from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, including bills seeking to increase the number of Court of Appeal judges from 70 to 110 and Federal High Court judges from 70 to 90 to enhance efficiency.
The Senate also received 24 health sector amendment bills and a request for confirmation of Justice Oyewole Joseph Oyewole as a Supreme Court Justice, while observing a minute of silence in honour of the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki.
