The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Zamfara State, Most Senior Evangelist Michael Taju Afolabi, has emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence and religious tolerance between Christians and Muslims, described harmony as the foundation of unity in the state.

He stated this while speaking with Journalist at the Celestial Church of Christ in Gusau the Zamfara State Capital during Church Service to mark the 2025 Christmas celebration.

Afolabi explained that, Christians living predominantly in Muslim communities in Zamfara enjoy cordial relationships with their neighbours, built on mutual respect and understanding.

According to him, his church is located within a Muslim-dominated neighbourhood, surrounded by Islamiyah and Arabic schools, yet religious differences have never been a barrier to peaceful living.

“We are friends. We do everything together. When we are having harvest or church programmes, they come to watch and celebrate with us, and when anything happens to us, they show sympathy. Likewise, when something happens to them, we also stand with them,” he said.

“God created us differently. If God wanted one religion, He would have made it so. Everyone should be free to worship according to their belief. I truly enjoy living in this area because they protect us and correct their children whenever there is any misunderstanding,” Afolabi added.

Speaking on the significance of Christmas, the CAN chairman described the celebration as a remembrance of the birth of Jesus Christ and an opportunity for Christians to demonstrate love, sacrifice, and concern for humanity”

Most Senior Evangelist Michael Taju Afolabi stressed that, Christmas should be celebrated peacefully, he However urged christians to avoid violence and disorder during the festive period.

“This is a season of prayer, not fighting or quarrelling, We are all one Nigeria,” he said.

He emphasized the need for Nigerians also to pray for the peace and safety of the nation, the state, and the leaders in the country irrespective of political party or affiliation.

“Yesterday, I shared rice with many Muslims around me. They were happy and came this morning to thank me. They appreciate the spirit of togetherness and religious tolerance,” he said.

“This is not the time for excesses. When you eat, eat moderately and remember to pray especially for the nation, the presidency, and those in authority. Leadership comes from God, and prayers are essential for good governance,” he advised.

On Christmas celebrations within the church, he explained that each denomination operates according to its doctrine, adding that his church observes Christmas through worship services followed by personal celebrations at home.

“Our celebration is simple. We conduct church services, pray, and then go home to rejoice peacefully,” he said.

The CAN chairman urged leaders perticulerly Zamfara and Federal governments to remain focused on governance and the welfare of the people, particularly in tackling insecurity.

“Insecurity is destructive. Government should stay committed, seek God’s guidance, and prioritize the welfare of the people. We appreciate the efforts being made and pray for sound health, wisdom, and long life for our leaders,” he concluded.

The Church witnessed large turnout of Christians faithful attending the Church Service.
