The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kano State has recorded the registration of 159,669 eligible voters during the first phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Kano State, Ambassador Abdu Abdussamadu Zango, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Kano.

According to him, 115,047 voters were registered through physical registration centres, while 44,622 completed their registration via the online platform.

Zango explained that the exercise was not without challenges, noting that network difficulties affected some INEC staff during the process.

He added that Tudun Wada and Doguwa Local Government Areas also experienced operational challenges, which were promptly addressed, allowing for the successful registration of eligible indigenes in the affected areas.

The REC revealed that an assessment of the exercise on an LGA-by-LGA basis showed that some local government areas did not perform up to expectation.

He assured that INEC would intensify efforts to ensure improved performance in such areas during the second phase of the CVR.

He further stated that preparations were at an advanced stage to establish a mega CVR registration centre in the state, aimed at accommodating Kano’s large population of eligible voters.

Zango also disclosed that the voters’ register has been displayed across all 44 local government areas of the state to allow citizens to make claims and corrections regarding issues such as misspelled names, incorrect dates of birth, gender errors, and other discrepancies.

Describing voter registration as the first critical step toward enabling Nigerians to exercise their civic rights, the REC urged citizens who have attained the age of 18 to take advantage of the second phase of the CVR.

He noted that the next phase of the registration exercise is scheduled to commence nationwide on January 5, 2026, through both physical centres and the online platform.

Zango commended the media for their support, describing journalists as partners in progress, and praised their dedication and commitment to achieving the objectives of the voter registration exercise.
