At least one person was killed and several others injured after gunmen stormed an Anglican church in Lilu, Ihiala LGA of Anambra State, during a Sunday activity.

The attackers reportedly fired repeatedly before setting parts of the building ablaze.

Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed on Monday that the church was partially burnt and some worshippers sustained varying injuries.

Describing the incident as “heinous,” he warned that the assault posed a serious threat to peace in the community and assured that security agencies would “relentlessly hunt down the perpetrators.”

Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu said operatives had been deployed to the area, with a joint team conducting intelligence-led operations to track the assailants.

He urged residents to remain calm and support the investigation with credible information.

The incident follows a series of violent attacks on churches nationwide, including the 30 November abduction of a pastor and his wife in Kogi State.
