Kano State has made a historic leap in Nigeria’s 2025 Subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking, jumping from 35th place last year to 4th position.

This marks one of the most significant improvements ever recorded by any state in the ranking’s history.

This was announced in a statement issued by the Spokesperson to the Governor, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, who attributed the remarkable rise to the leadership of Abba Kabir Yusuf administration.

The governor has made environmental sustainability a top priority for his administration.

Under Governor Yusuf’s leadership, Kano State has rolled out multiple climate-focused initiatives.

These include the adoption of the Kano State Climate Change Policy, deployment of renewable energy in public institutions, and urban greening projects as part of the ongoing urban renewal programme.

The state has also intensified efforts in afforestation and erosion control, aimed at building resilience to climate change and improving environmental health across communities.

These efforts have drawn national and international attention.

At the official unveiling of the ranking in Abuja, Kano was represented by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Hashim, who described the recognition as a testament to the governor’s commitment to sustainable development.

The British High Commission’s First Secretary for Climate Diplomacy, Samantha Harrison, presented the certificate of recognition to Kano State at the event.

Governor Yusuf extended his gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Environment, the Society for Planet and Prosperity, the University of Bristol, and international partners including the UK-FCDO for their support.

He reaffirmed his administration’s determination to build a greener, climate-smart future for Kano State.
