Federal University of Transportation Technology, Daura, (FUTD) has announced plans to utilize TETFUND interventions to enhance infrastructure and research at the institution.

The University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Umar Adamu Katsayal, made this known during a press briefing to highlight the university’s achievements two years after its establishment.

He recalled that the university, which was established in 2019 to develop human capacity in Nigeria’s transport sector, officially commenced academic activities in 2023.

The institution, which offers courses in railway, marine, and air transportation engineering, logistics, and management, was enlisted by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) last year and included in the TETFUND budget for the 2025 fiscal year.

Prof. Katsayal said the institution would utilize its first tranche of TETFUND intervention to build an engineering workshop for training students in transportation logistics management, repairs, and maintenance.

“We are expecting our first TETFUND intervention this year, and we will use it to build a large engineering workshop where we will train our students on transport logistics management, repairs and maintenance.

“The workshop will be the first of its kind and it will provide a unique kind of training, we will engage seasoned transport engineers from our affiliates both within and outside the country as technical resource persons to manage the workshop.

“This will greatly enhance the quality of academic and technical training we woll provide on the institution, both students and academic staff will benefit from specialized training at the workshop”, he said.

The FUTD Vice Chancellor noted that in two years, the institution has achieved much in terms of student intake, staff strength and academic programs, as it now runs fourteen engineering and management courses that are accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

He explained that the institution has established affiliations with universities, research institutes and transportation logistics companies and organizations within and outside Nigeria.

Prof. Katsayal listed the affiliations to include Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, the National Institute of Transport Technology and the College of Aviation Technology, Zaria, as well as institutions and companies in China and Russia.

The FUTD VC disclosed that the university has signed Memoranda of Understanding with institutions and transport companies in China and Russia to provide practical training in transportation logistics management for academic staffers and students of the institution.

He said this will expose them to practical skills and modern technology in transport logistics management, to contribute to the development of the Nigerian transport sector.

Prof. Katsayal urged the federal government to increase funding to the institution to enable it expand its infrastructure, academic programs and research capacity in order to meet its establishment mandate.
