As the world commemorates World Tuberculosis TB Day, the National Orientation Agency NOA has called on Nigerians to remain informed about TB, its transmission, and preventive measures to curb its spread.

In a statement issued on Sunday, NOA described tuberculosis as a contagious bacterial infection that primarily affects the lungs but can also impact other parts of the body.

The agency stressed the need for public awareness and early detection to prevent complications and reduce infection rates.

The statement explained that TB bacteria are airborne, spreading when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks.

Given its highly infectious nature, NOA urged the public to adopt necessary precautions.

To minimize the risk of TB transmission, NOA advised the public to cover their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing, while ensuring proper ventilation in living and working environments.

“Seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms such as a persistent cough, fever, or weight loss.

Ensure children receive the BCG vaccine, which provides protection against severe forms of TB,” it adds

The agency emphasized that early diagnosis and treatment are crucial in combating TB, and advised individuals with symptoms persisting for more than two weeks to visit a healthcare facility immediately.

NOA reassured the public that TB is curable with proper medication and strict adherence to treatment.
