Senate has confirmed four presidential nominees for appointment as members of the Police Service Commission (PSC).

The confirmation followed the approval of the report submitted by the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, presented by its Chairman, Senator Abdulhamid Malam-Madori.

While presenting the report, Malam-Madori listed the confirmed PSC members as Justice Paul Galumje (Rtd), Abdulfatah Mohammed, DIG Uba Ringim (Rtd), and Justice Christine Dabup (Rtd).

He said that in line with its mandate, the committee requested a review of the nominee’s CVs and Provisional Security Clearance Report from the Department of State Security Service.

He said the nominees were subsequently invited for screening exercise to ascertain the suitability for appointment as members of the Commission.

In conducting the screening, the committee was guided by section 154 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended and the Police Service Commission establishment Act 2001″.

Senator Simon Lalong (APC-Plateau) supported the committee’s report and urged its speedy passage, citing the nominees’ track records and the positions they previously held. The Senate complied with the recommendation.

In his remarks, the Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, who presided over the plenary, commended the committee and urged the confirmed members of the PSC to see their appointment as a call to national service.

In a related development, the Senate also approved the confirmation of 12 nominees out of 13 presented by President Bola Tinubu for appointment as Chairman and members of the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC).

Presenting the report, the Senate Committee Chairman on Establishment, Senator Cyril Fasuyi, representing Ekiti North, stated that all the nominees had fulfilled the prerequisites and faced no objections to their nomination.

He, therefore, recommended their confirmation, except for Hon. Dr. Nnanna Uzor Kalu from the South-East.

According to the Chairman of the Committee, the Senate received a petition against one of the nominees and, therefore, suggested that the nominee’s consideration be suspended pending the outcome of the report from the Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions.

However, he recommended that the remaining 12 nominees be confirmed.

The confirmed members are Dr. Saviour Enyiekere as Chairman from the South-South, while the members include Sulaiman Othman Hunkuyi (North-West), Yusuf A. Yusuf (North-West), Aminu Ibrahim Malle (North-East), Alhaji Lawal Maina Mahmud (North-East), and Mark Hanmation Terso (North-Central).
