Federal Fire Service has launched a nationwide fire safety campaign, urging Nigerians especially Muslim households to exercise heightened caution both at home and on the roads.

The initiative, led by the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Mr. Abdulganiyu Jaji, aims at preventing fire-related incidents and road accidents during Ramadan.

A statement by the Controller General Mr. Abdulganiyu Jaji highlighted that Ramadan, a period of fasting, prayer, and reflection, often involves preparing meals late at night (for suhoor) and in the evening (for iftar).

He said these unique routines, coupled with fatigue and distractions, can significantly raise the risk of kitchen fires.

“Fasting can sometimes affect concentration levels due to tiredness, and dehydration. When combined with busy kitchens during iftar preparations, the risk of fire accidents becomes even higher,” he stated.

The Controller of the Federal Fire Service stressed the need for extra vigilance, especially while cooking.

He advised Nigerians to never leave cooking unattended and to always turn off stoves or gas cookers if they must step away.

Mr. Jaji highlighted some steps that would help reduce fire outbreaks to include staying alert while cooking, keeping children away, appropriate clothing and proper handling of hot oil among others.

Beyond home safety, the Controller General also raised concerns about road safety during Ramadan, he noted that changes in daily routines such as rushing home for iftar could heighten the risk of road accidents.

“The shift in schedules during Ramadan can increase the chances of both fire outbreaks and road traffic accidents. We urge everyone to remain cautious in the kitchen and on the roads,” he said.

To ensure safety and reach as many people as possible, the Controller General said the Federal Fire Service has planned to collaborate with community leaders, religious organizations, and market associations to create awareness and ensure a safe and peaceful Ramadan celebration.

“In the coming weeks, we will expand this campaign through community engagement, working closely with religious and traditional leaders to share these vital fire safety tips,” Engr. Jaji added.

The Controller General Federal of the Fire Service reminded Nigerians of the immediate steps to take during a fire incident which included evacuating the premises, calling emergency services, and avoiding risky attempts to extinguish large fires without professional help.
