The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is set to present its 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) and the State of the Climate in Nigeria report to the public.

For the first time, the SCP will be made available in three major Nigerian languages to enhance accessibility and inclusivity.

This was disclosed in a statement by NiMet’s Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, who emphasized the importance of early warnings in fostering a climate-resilient aviation industry and supporting sustainable socio-economic development.

Theme for 2025

The theme for this year’s SCP is “The Role of Early Warnings towards a Climate Resilient Aviation Industry for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development.”

Purpose of the SCP

NiMet releases the SCP annually in the first quarter to provide insights into expected patterns of climatic variables, including rainfall and temperature. This effort aligns with its mandate to advise the government and the public on weather, climate, and water-related issues.

Prof. Anosike noted that the SCP serves as a critical tool for guiding socio-economic activities across key sectors such as:

  • Agriculture: Predicting the length of the cropping season.
  • Aviation: Enhancing safety through early warnings.
  • Disaster Risk Management: Preparing for climate-induced hazards.
  • Health: Issuing Malaria and Meningitis vigilance forecasts.
  • Energy: Supporting hydro and renewable power planning.
  • Water Resources ManagementTelecommunicationTourism, and Transport: Informing policy and operations.

The SCP will include detailed forecast information such as; Onset and cessation dates of the 2025 rainy season, The length of the cropping season, Expected total rainfall for all 774 Local Government Areas, Temperature forecasts (January–May), Malaria and Meningitis surveillance predictions.
