The federal government has awarded a N14 billion contract to Buildwell for the reconstruction of the outer Marina shoreline, specifically to reinforce the rail line.

Senator Dave Umahi, the Minister of Works, while speaking in Lagos, stressed that the infrastructure, whether serving the Lagos State or federal governments, was for the welfare of all Nigerians.

“Over the past three months, we observed serious threats to this critical infrastructure, particularly the rail line that was recently commissioned by the President,” he said.

“The existing shoreline has deteriorated very seriously, mostly along the outer Marina to a total length of 3.9 kilometres.”

Senator Umahi hinted that five companies were invited to bid for the contract, with Buildwell emerging winner over its main competitor, CCECC, which bid N145 billion.

According to the Minister, the Buildwell contract was awarded through the BPP and Federal Executive Council’s approval, with President Bola Tinubu insisting on due process.

The 12-month contract will use stronger concrete and anti-sulphate material to prevent salt water from corroding the concrete.

The Managing Director of Buildwell, George Mohanna said the protection work would be done within 12 months and “the shoreline would be protected for more than 50 years, even up to a hundred years”.
