The Climate Justice Committee, with support from OXFAM, organized a One-Day Capacity Building Training on effective Advocacy for its partners, such as the media, CSOs, and government officials.
The training took place in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State.
The event was part of activities to commemorate the International Day of Action for World Environment Day 2024 and aimed to create awareness and draw the attention of policymakers to current environmental challenges.
In an interview, Mr. Fidelis Nashuka, the lead of the Taraba Climate Justice Committee, stated that the training also aimed at building the capacity of their partners to enable them to carry out advocacy on environmental sustainability to policymakers.
The Climate Justice Committee was formed by OXFAM Nigeria through the African Activists for Climate Justice.
Nashuka noted the depletion of environmental resources without strong efforts for replacement, affecting society, and emphasized the need for quick action.
He stressed the need for a review of environmental laws and the absence of a climate change work plan in the state that would give them access to funding.
Mr. Fidelis Nashuka, who is also the Taraba State President of NCNCSON, called on the people to protect the environment by planting trees.
One of the participants, Mrs. Prisca Joel, the Executive Director of WAYOMTI Charity Foundation (Women and Youth Made to Impact), described the training as impactful and advocated for all to promote climate justice.
She noted that planting economic trees is a valuable skill and expressed that engagement of women and youth would help them become self-reliant.
“Our major focus is to empower women and youth in the society. This is a good program from which I have learned a lot, and I will take what I have learned today back to my organization,” Mrs. Joel assured.
