Over six thousand children will be reached with severe acute malnutrition kits in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.
World Health Organization WHO North East Emergency Manager , Dr. Beatrice Muraguri made this known while presenting the assorted kits to representatives of Borno state government and other development partners in Maiduguri.
The Emergency Manager observed that cases of acute malnutrition in the region is on the increase occasioned by the lean season, noting that WHO as the cluster lead agency will work closely with state governments and partners to manage the cases.
She stressed that measures taken is to prevent further worsening of the cases in the region, hence deployment of the commodities.
“We will ensure as the cluster lead agency, we manage the pipeline as WHO so that we share with partners and they go to the local governments, the get the cases and managed. That is why we are handing over to the government today and as partners we are here to support the government ” Dr. Muraguri said.
Permanent Secretary, State Ministry for Health Dr Mohammed Ghuluze represented by Malam Adamu Usman said Borno state government with the support of partners are making effort to ensure that malnourished children receive proper care and attention.
He assured that all the commodities distributed reached the targeted areas, noting that the ministry has strong logistics chain system.
“The ministry will get tough to ensure that all these kits that have been distributed was taken to the right people and any body caught with this commodity in an open market, the ministry will take a drastic measure” Malam Usman emphasized.
Speaking on behalf of the partners, Dr. Idongesit Wilson of Action Against Hunger and Christiana Bamigboye of International Medical Corps said the kits are coming at the right time as cases of acute malnutrition was on the increase.
Correspondent Dauda Iliya reports that USAID and Government of Germany donated the items and will be distributed in eleven most affected local government areas in Borno state which include Maiduguri Metropolitan, Jere, Gwoza, Damboa, Monguno, Kaga, Gubio, Mobbar, Konduga, Bama and Askira Uba.
