FCTA Destroys 476 Motorcycles

Written by Basirat Memudu

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has crushed another set of 476 motorcycles impounded for operating in unauthorised areas.

The Director, Directorate of Road Traffic Services ( DRTS), Dr Abdulateef Bello said, during the exercise at Area 1 in Abuja, the crushing of the bikes would be sustained until the riders complied with the restriction guidelines.

Dr Bello, who warned that the Administration would not tolerate lawlessness in the nation’s capital, told residents to support government in discouraging the riders from plying prohibited routes.

The Senior Special Assistant to FCT Minister on Monitoring, Inspection and Enforcement, Comrade Ikharo Attah, who observed the exercise, said the task force would remain firm in going after violators.

Comrade Attah bemoaned the excesses of the riders, and expressed shock that despite the thousands of impounded bikes already crushed in public glare a few months ago, some commercial bike riders were “still adamant”.

“We would continue to crush them in full public glare and scrap sold while the money paid into government’s account,” he vowed.

“It is worrisome that despite all that we do on a daily basis, the activities of these commercial motor-cyclists have been linked with criminal activities. They ought not to operate within the Capital City, but here we are seeing them operating in total contravention of what the law says in a modern city like Abuja,” he said.

“I thought that having crushed thousands of the illegal bikes, this menace would have reduced. If not that we crush them publicly, people would have been thinking that we sold them to ourselves,” Comrade Attah added.
