Kano Dry Season Farmers Decry Over Closure Of Irrigation Channels

Dry Season Farmers in Kura, Garun Malam and Bunkure local government areas, have decried over Closure of Irrigation Channels.

Chairman Kura local government Farmers Association ,Alhaji Ayuba Abubakar expressed Dismay on the blockage of Water Channels,while Speaking to Radio Nigeria in Kura,Kano State.

He explained that the Expansion is a Welcome development, but the needs of Farmers must be put into Consideration.

Alhaji Ayuba noted that, Irrigation water requirements of Rice,Maize,Wheat and Tomatoes which are the Major Crops in the area, cannot be met under the Present Situation.

He maitained that, many Farm Products would be destroyed if the irrigation requirements were not met within few days.

The Chairman stressed that, lack of irrigation farming would Promote Famine and Poverty,Saying that dry season Agriculture increases Food Security and reduce Unemployment among youth.

” Most Products would not grow under the harsh weather”he Said.

Also speaking, Village head of Bauren Tanko, Malam Dahiru Yusha’u Stressed that, Farmers in the area did not engage in dry Season Farming last year due to the Closure of Dams for repairs.

He highlighted that, the Present Economic situation due to Naira Redesigned Policy, and Water Scarcity had increased Poverty and high cost of Food items.

Mallan Dahiru Yusha’u appealed to Government and relevant Stakeholders, to do everything possible, to save their Crops from destruction.

” Am appealing to the state government to release the water channels as our crops are dying “he Said.

Radio Nigeria reports that, Irrigation Farming is seen the most efficient Job, to Boost Food Production for achievement of Food Security in the country, and Generation of Employment opportunities to people.
