President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the transition committee, headed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, to ensure the achievements of the HIV programme are “clearly highlighted” in transition notes for the incoming administration.

President Buhari issued the directive when the Director-General, National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Dr Gambo Aliyu, visited him at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Also on hand to see the President, alongside Dr Aliyu, were the US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Molly Phee, and the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, President Buhari assured the US Government that Nigeria would “continue to prioritize the fight against HIV-AIDS until the disease is no longer a threat to public health”.

He also promised that the Federal Government would continue to “work with the leadership of the country’s Governors Forum and the organised private sector” to provide adequate resources and “sustainable financing” for the national response to HIV.

Only last week, the President approved the establishment of a Presidential Transition Council for facilitating and managing the 2023 transition programme.

He also signed Executive Order No. 14 of 2023 on the Facilitation and Management of Presidential Transitions.

The Transition Council was inaugurated by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Tuesday 14th February, 2023.
