UNICEF Renovates Classrooms, Toilet In Kano

United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Kano field office staff association, has officially handed over classes and toilets renovated at Government girls secondary school, Badawa Kano State.

Speaking during the commissioning, chairperson UNICEF Kano field office staff association, Mr. Saka Adebayo Ibraheem explained that, two classrooms, principal’s office, eight units of toilets were renovated as part of the association’s charity project in 2022.

Others were, provision of 30 sets of three seater chairs with desks, and reconnection of water supply to the toilets, to improve learning outcomes for the girls through a conducive learning environment.

Mr Saka stressed that, similar support and collaboration with government ministries and departments, parents and communities, would go a long way in ensuring retention and completion of girls education.

The chairperson, commended chief of UNICEF field office Mr Rahma Farah, members of the staff association, Kano State Senior Secondary Schools Management Board (KSSSMB), principal and staff of G.G.S.S BADAWA for making the project a reality.

“Atleast 90 students would enjoy the renovated classrooms and desks provided while the entire 1,851 girls, 42 teachers and the principal will benefit from the eight units of toilets renovated”

In her remarks, principal director government girls secondary school Badawa, Hajiya Binta Sidin Ali explained that, the school would forever be indebted to the association for supporting the school.

She highlighted that, the task of providing qualitative education to students is a collective responsibility between government, NOGs, CBOs, charity organizations, PTA and old students association, as the burden outweighs government resources and capabilities.

Hajiya Binta pointed out that, the genesis of the support, originated from Malam Salihu Abdulhamid a staff of UNICEF, who noticed the dilapidated nature of the block with students sitting on the floor.

“With emphaty, he swung into action and was able to draw the attention of his colleagues at UNICEF who carried out this giant project we are commissioning today”.

Some of the students who spoke to Radio Nigeria, Aisha Salisu Abdulhamid and Maryam Abdulrahman, described the support as a huge development that would go a long way in boosting students morale in various aspects.

They maintained that, the renovation had improved the sanitary condition and security of their toilets, and classrooms.

They appealed to philanthropists and wealthy individuals, to emulate the kind gesture of UNICEF Kano field office staff association, to move education to international standards.

Others who spoke during the commissioning, include representative of the executive secretary KSSSMB Dr. Bello Shehu, ward head of Badawa, Alhaji Zakariyya, chief Imam of Badawa, M. Rabi’u, among others.

Certificates and medals of appreciation, were presented to chief of Kano field office Mr Rahma Farah, and chairperson staff association Mr. Saka Adebayo Ibraheem.
