Federal Government says over seven thousand farmers would benefit from the Gari Irrigation project in Kano and Jigawa States.

The Director of Irrigation and Drainage of the federal ministry of water resources Engineeer Esther Oluniyi stated this during the handing over of sector six of the Gari Irrigation project to farmers after completion.

She said sector six of the Gari irrigation project consisted of 228 hectares of land.

Esther Oluniyi explained that the Gari Irrigation project covers an area of over two thousand Hectares of land, streaming that the irrigation and Drainage infrastructure falls within five local government areas of kano and jigsaw states, which include Kunchi, Dambatta, Makoda, of kano state others are Kazaure and Roni of jigawa states.

“Currently, the federal ministry of water resources through her mandate in irrigated agriculture has developed plans in alignment with the present administration’s vision to diversify the nation’s economy and create significant welfare for the Nigerian citizen by empowering and bringing one hundred million Nigerians out of poverty by the year 2030.”

She maintained that as part of efforts to ensure sustainable operation of the irrigation scheme, the ministry engaged the services of interface consultants for the establishment of strengthening the water users Association, and training of farmers, on the effective operation and maintenance of the irrigation system.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiary communities Alhaji Haruna Isyaku Makoda applauded the foresight and commitment of federal government to initiate the project.

He assured the government that they make adequate utilization of the facility, and urged farmers not to misuse the golden opportunity, geared towards boosting food production.

Shortly after the handing over, women from the beneficiary communities were trained on how to maintain acceptable water quality and hygiene for irrigated agriculture.
