Federal Government says major works on the Abuja-Kaduna highway will soon resume to ensure free flow of traffic.

Minister of State Works and Housing, Mr Umar El-Yakub gave the assurance while inspecting resumption of palliative work and other road projects along the highway.

Mr Umar El-Yakub explained that owing to the deplorable state of the road, palliative work would continue throughout the length of the road for smooth commuting.

He maintained that the work is preparatory to full resumption of contractors to site, considering the huge resources mobilized for the project, stressing that Kaduna-Zaria and Zaria-Kano highways will be commissioned between now and the first quarter of next year.

The Minister debunked reports in some quarters that contractors have abandoned work, pointing out that the project was suspended owing to heightened security threats and the rainy season.

Mr Umar El-Yakub called on Nigerians to uphold the virtue of patriotism by playing their part in protecting critical national assets.

Also speaking, majority leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa disclosed that the National Assembly would ensure the speedy passage of next year’s appropriation bill in the interest of infrastructural development.

He commended the Minister and his team for the effort, and assured that the legislature would ensure funding of all projects being executed by the present administration.

Acting Controller of works at the FCT, Engr Usman Yakubu said the project handlers have demonstrated commitment to delivering quality and durable work on the road.

In a remark, Federal Controller of works in Kaduna, Engr Finbarr Zirra noted that remarkable achievements have been recorded especially on the eastern bye-pass, awarded twenty years ago.

While commending the Minister for his continued support, the Federal Controller solicited for improved security cover to ensure timely completion of the project.

Usman Sani.
