The Nigerian Customs Service says it has, in the last seven years, sacked over two thousand officers found to have committed various offences.

Briefing State house Correspondents in Abuja on the activities of the Customs Service, the Comptroller General, retired Colonel Hameed Ali, said those that connived with accredited agents in committing crime had been prosecuted along with their accomplices.

On the Service’s inability to stop smuggling, Colonel Hameed Ali said efforts were being made to persuade other neighbouring countries to work with them towards checkmating the inflow on contraband.

He argued against the much-publicised complaint that customs duty on vehicles had been exorbitant, which has in turn shot up the prices of vehicles, explaining that importers are now being made to pay the legally-charged rates.
