Kano state government has reaffirmed its dedication to curtailing drug abuse, and unemployment among women and youths in the state.

The state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Zahra’u Muhammad Umar, made the indication during the graduation ceremony of trained and reformed drug dependant youths, at Kiru Reformatory Institute, Kano.

According to her, twenty males and one female were reformed and trained on various enterepreneurship skills to become self reliant.

The commissioner noted that, each drug dependant youth, has been counselled on effects of drug abuse, before undergoing classes on recreational activities, entrepreneurship , and other relevant knowledge to make them useful to the society.

Dr. Zahra’u Muhammad Umar noted that, parents of each reformed youth paid seventy thousand naira for feeding, while the state government takes care of medical bills, materials for entrepreneurial training, staff allowances, among others.

She maintained that, the graduands were provided with sewing machines, carpentry tools, shoes, bag materials, chickens, and start up capital.

“The 21 drug dependent youths were trained for four months”

In his remarks, Chairman Kiru local government area, Alhaji Muntari Isiyaku Kafin Maiyaki, explained that the reformatory institute had reformed thousands of youths since inception.

He noted that, the establishment of the institute, had uplifted the standards of living among people, by curtailing drug abuse and unemployment.

Alhaji Muntari Isyaku Kafin Maiyaki charged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the knowledge, materials and start up capital.

Speaking in behalf of the beneficiaries, two brothers from Kaduna state Aliyu and Ibrahim Umar Muhammad who spoke to Radio Nigeria, commended the state government for the kind gesture, and promised to rededicate themselves to skills learnt at the reformatory institute

Radio Nigeria reports that, the Kiru reformatory institute was established to cater for male and female drug addicts by, rehabilitating and empowering them to become self reliant.
