Women in Politics Forum have appealed to media organizations to work towards promoting increased women’s participation in politics and leadership with a view to ensuring compliance with the thirty five percent affirmative action in the country.

National President of the forum, Barrister Ebere Ifendu made the appeal at a news briefing in Sokoto state.

Barrister Ebere argued that the media is capable of transforming the political landscape for sustainable development.

The National President who pointed out that the forum is a non profit and non partisan civil society organization also called on the three arms of government and security agencies to promote women participation in politics in order to limit the current gender margin and reverse poor women’s participation in governance.

Ebere said after the release of the final list of presidential and national assemblies candidates for 2023 election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, women represent less than 10 percent of the candidates contesting for various seats.

According to her, a survey carried out by the forum to gauge women participation in politics, indicates that despite advocacies and proposals by civil society groups as well as policies and legislations by the government, women are seriously marginalized in the arena.
