Jigawa State : Flood Takes Over Ringim – Kazaure Road

Written by Godwin Duru

Flood currently ravaging some parts of Jigawa state has taken over Ringim-Kazaure road and threatened to sack the Sankara community in Ringim Local government area of the state.

Radio Nigeria reports that motorists and other road users were stranded forcing them to go back and follow the alternative road to their destinations.

The road which linked towns like Babura, Garki, Kazaure, Gwiwa, Yankwashi, and Daura in Katsina state was completely taken over by the flood.

In an interview with newsmen, the district head of Sankara town Sanusi Ahmad Mahmud said the incident happened Sunday night around 2:00 am as a result of continuous heavy downpours which led to the overflow of streams in the area.

According to him, the flood had taken over the road and resulted in the submergence of the market and other public buildings in the area.

He explained that the water is also making its way into the town forcing residents to flee to their relatives for shelter.

The local Government Council chairman Alhaji Shehu Sule Udi Ringim said over 1000 houses had collapsed.

He said thousands of farmlands were washed away as a result of the flood caused by heavy downpour in the local government.

He said the local government had provided the empty sacks and sand for the embarkment of the area to prevent the water from getting access into the town.

Sule Udi however appealed to the state and Federal governments to come to the aid of residents and to support the victims of the flood.

Our Correspondent also reports that over 500 houses were washed away as a result of heavy downpour in Karnaya and Yar gaba in Dutse local government area of the state.

Thousands of people who were displaced by the flood have to seek shelter at primary schools and filling stations along Kano- Maiduguri Road.

Some of the affected victims interviewed by Radio Nigeria called on the National Emergency Management Agency NEMA to come to their aid.
