NiMet Begins Evaluation Of Climate Prediction

NiMet, Nigeria’s Meteorological Agency, has begun the scientific evaluation of its Seasonal Climate Prediction for 2022.

The exercise is an annual event carried out by a Task team formed by Director General Prof Mansur Matazu upon his appointment in 2021.

According to Team Coordinator Mr Haruna Zakari, the task team is tasked with evaluating the predicted onset period, the Little Dry Season based on the areas affected, as well as extreme weather events recorded during the evaluation period and the areas affected.

Mr Zakari explained that at the end of the exercise, the team will be expected to submit a report of their findings to the DG, with the goal of strengthening early warning systems.

NiMet in 2022 presented the seasonal climate prediction to the general public on the 15th of February, 2022 at the NAF Conference Centre and unveiled by the Minister of Aviation Senator Hadi Sirika

Meanwhile, Federal Ministry of Justice has commended the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s compliance to the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, 2011.

The Director General of NiMet, represented by the Director of Legal Services of the Agency, Ahmed Abdu, explained that the Freedom of Information Act was enacted to develop the access to public records and information by empowering the public to hold public institutions accountable.
