Kano state Government says, preparations have reached advanced stage for the establishment of more water conservation structures and minor irrigation facilities across some local government areas in the state.
State commissioner for environment, Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso made the disclosure while briefing newsmen to commemorate world environment day in Kano.
According to him, the construction of water conservation structures and water irrigation facilities at ‘Yan Sabo in Tofa local government area has reached 95 percent completion.
The commissioner explained that, the new structures would be established in Takai, Shanono and Makoda local government areas.
Dr. Getso pointed out that the aim of the conservation exercise was to protect the environment from hazards.
“Efforts are under way to provide major erosion control majors at Dawakin Tofa,Nasarawa and Tarauni local government areas”
He Maintained that, the state was committed to the evacuation of waste and had recently disilted and evacuated about 70,000 linear meters of drainages between April and May 2022,
The commissioner noted that, as part of efforts to address environmental pollution and combat climate change over three million trees seedlings were planted across the state.
On the multiple gas explosions that occured between may and June, the commissioner said the ministry would strenghten surveillance to ensure safety in handling gas.
He said, a committee had been set up to embark on massive enlightenment on the media and at areas where gas is handled.
Dr. Kabiru Getso revealed that, the Kano state policy on environment has been put into effect and would give proper guidance to the environment sector.
“As an emergency response the state government had set up a high powered committee to check the situation”
Radio Nigeria reports that, the world environment day is an annual event set aside by the united nations to create awareness on environmental protection.
