Sanitation Day: NYSC Takes CampaignTo Kano Motor Parks, Others

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has held its 2021 National Environmental Sanitation Day across all the 44 local government areas in Kano State.

Flagging off the exercise at Unguwa-Uku motor park, Tarauni Local Government , the Director-General of the scheme, Maj-Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim, said environmental sanitation was recognized globally as one of the key requirements for the prevention of diseases and their escalation to epidemic proportion.

The DG who was represented by the Kano State Coordinator of NYSC, Hajiya Aisha Tata-Muhammad said efforts must be stepped up to enlighten the general public, especially rural dwellers on the health risks of poor hygiene.

“To achieve this, every member of the community will have to be mobilized for participation in the exercise which would feature sensitisation, disease surveillance and report of outbreaks” the DG said.

He noted that at the recent nationwide medical outreaches conducted by NYSC Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers, most of the ailments diagnosed and treated were as a result of poor hygiene.

General Shuaibu Ibrahim maintained that the sensitation efforts would focus on clean food and water intake, proper disposal of waste, good grooming on regular basis, regular hand wash among others.

“The public will be further educated on; handling of toxic materials, tree planting to support healthy ecosystem, disinfection of the environment and susceptibility and risky habits.

He thanked the state government, traditional rulers community leaders for their support and assured Nigerians of NYSC’s commitment to offering health and other services, including environmental sanitation.

Earlier, the Head of Community Development Service, Malam Bala Dabo, commended the scheme for the efforts toward keeping the environment clean and healthy

During the event, corps members were engaged in several sanitation exercises such as sweeping, cleaning of drainages, waste evacuation and cutting of grasses, among others.
