Written by Yusuf Zubairu

Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU, says it will embark on a nationwide strike if government fail to fulfil promises reached between them.

The National President of the Union Dr Smart Olugbeko stated this while briefing newsmen shortly after the Zonal Delegates Congress at the Federal College of Education in Zaria.

Dr Smart Olugbeko said the meeting was aimed at keeping the Congress abreast of the lingering issues between Federal government and the union.

He also explained that the zonal delegates and other members were sensitized over the union’s proposed nationwide strike if government reneges on its promises.

According to him, the union will wait and see what the government has promised and how far has it gone to fulfil such promises.

He said if government reneges on its promises, there was a likelihood that the union would initiate the permissible trade union activity that allows it to take further action.

Dr Olugbeko pointed out that by the time the union meets next month, the principal officers would present the issues at the meeting for discussion.

As of now the union had not heard from the government and has already made its position known to them since there is no response” he added.

The National President congratulated the Congress of the Federal College of Education Zaria on the appointment of its Provost and the Chairman of the union as the Deputy Provost, saying the appointment would encourage synergy between the union and the management of the college.
