Katsina State Independent Electoral Commission has fixed Saturday, 11th April 2022 as date for the conduct of local council elections in the state.

Chairman of the commission, Alhaji Ibrahim Bako-Malumfashi announced this at a press conference in Katsina.

He explained that the date of the election which was exactly 90 days from now, is in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2010.

Alhaji Ibrahim Bako appealed to political parties, prospective contestants and other stakeholders to strictly adhere to election laws and guidelines while assuring them of the commission’s resolve to make the election free, fair and credible.

On the fate of persons displaced from their polling units by insecurity in parts of the state, the SIEC Chairman said all necessary arrangements would be made to ensure every eligible voter exercises his franchise in the elections.

Our correspondent reports that the 34 Local Governments in Katsina State have gone for the last six and a half years without elected councils after the State House of Assembly in 2015 annulled the last-held Local Government elections, citing irregularities in its conduct.

The sacked chairmen and councillors had challenged the legislature’s decision in court, a legal battle that lingered for six years before the Supreme Court ruled last year in favour of the State Assembly’s decision.
