Borno state Governor Babagana Zulum has signed the Violence Against Persons VAP and Child Protection bills into law.

At a ceremony at Government House Maiduguri, Governor Zulum said the two laws have undergone series of amendments to  be in tune with religious, norms and culture of people of the state. 

According to him, some clauses were either altered, omitted or inserted based on inputs made by experts during the public hearing and other engagements before the state assembly finally passed the bill. 

‘today we have witnessed yet another milestone in the history of Borno state by signing two major Bills that were passed by the Borno state House of Assembly.  They are the Borno state Child Protection Law 2021 and the Borno state Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law 2021″ Zulum said.

Speaker of the state assembly Honourable Abdulkarim Lawan said the two laws are Acts of the National Assembly passed in 2003, however states have been encouraged to domesticate the law to improve the wellbeing of citizens. 

Shading light on the Child Protection Law, State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Kaka-Shehu Lawan said the Law will safeguard the rights of children and protect them from any form of abuse.

He remarked that stringent measures have been provided in the legislation against any person that violates the rights of a child.

Borno is the thirtieth state to domesticate the Child Rights Act into law.

Similarly, Governor Babagana Zulum has signed the 2022 budget of 269.7 billion naira into law.

The Governor warned Commissioners against extra budgetary spending and assured of better budget performance in the fiscal year. 

Speaker of the state Assembly Honourable Abdulkarim Lawan said over 177 billion naira was increased on original budget size after due consultation with ministries, departments and agencies.
