Civil Society Organizations in Kaduna State have advocated for the establishment of high powered steering committee to monitor and evaluate implementation of the Law on Violence Against Persons.

North West Zonal Coordinator of Gender and Constitution Reform Network Dr. Lydia Umar who led the delegation stated this at the presentation of award to the State Ministry of Human Services and Social Development.

She explained that the law has been in existence since December, 2018 but its implementation was slow due to lack of proper awareness by victims and law enforcement agencies.

Dr. Lydia Umar explained that the Civil Society organizations took a decision to present award to the state government through the Ministry as a mark of appreciation for the priority accorded to issues affecting women.

According to her, the Civil Society groups defied the early rainfall to stage a rally at the ministry in commemoration of the International Day Against Trafficking in Persons.

Dr. Lydia Commended the Commissioner Hajiya Hafsat Baba for her doggedness in pushing for women’s rights.

Receiving the award on behalf of the state government, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Mr. Stephen Joseph expressed appreciation and promised government’s commitment to welfare of citizens and also provision of necessary social development infrastructure.

Other demands presented by the group to the state government include the establishment of shelter for women whose rights have been violated, provision of sexual reference centres,
legal backing in support of 35% affirmative action, giving support for women economic empowerment and sexual reproductive health Rights.
