Reps To Investigate Alleged Missing Firearms, Ammunition

House of Representatives is to probe the alleged missing firearms and ammunition of the Nigerian Police Force and other security agencies.

The decision was sequel to the adoption of a motion on the need to investigate the allegation contained in the 2019 Report of the Auditor General of the Federation.

Presenting the motion, Deputy Minority leader, Mr Toby Okechukwu, expressed dismay over the alleged loss of about 180,000 different types of arms and ammunition of the Police Force, which could fall into wrong hands.

Mr Okechukwu, explained that of the number of the alleged missing gadgets 88,000 were AK-47 rifles, about 4,000 assorted rifles and pistols from different police formations, which could not be accounted for from January 2020 to date.

Adopting the motion, the lawmakers have called on the Inspector General of Police to take urgent steps to apprehend those culpable for the depletion of the armory believed to be fuelling insecurity in the country.

The House also mandated its committee on Public Accounts and Adhoc Committee investigating the arms purchase and utilization to investigate the matter for further legislative action.
