Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has intensified its public enlightenment campaign for the 2026 Ember Months, urging motorists and other road users to avoid overloading and mixed loading to reduce road crashes and fatalities.
The FRSC Sector Commander in Kaduna State, Corps Commander Andrew Paul Longkam, made the call during an advocacy visit to the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Kaduna.
Corps Commander Longkam described the media as strategic partners in road safety advocacy, noting that their support was vital in extending the campaign’s message to motorists, cyclists, tricycle operators and pedestrians.
He explained that vehicular movement usually increases during the Ember Months as commercial transport operators resume full operations after the farming season, while preparations for the Yuletide celebrations further heighten travel activities across the country.
The Sector Commander said this year’s campaign is themed, “Overloading and Mixed Loading: A Dangerous Trend to Avoid.” while warning that overloaded vehicles are more likely to lose stability and cause fatal crashes, particularly during emergencies.
He also described mixed loading, which involves carrying passengers alongside goods or animals, as a dangerous practice that could increase casualties in the event of a crash.
Corps Commander Longkam urged transport unions and motor park operators to ensure that their members comply with road safety regulations.
He also called on commercial drivers to prioritise the lives of passengers entrusted to their care.
Andrew Longkam advised passengers to reject overloaded vehicles, stressing that their safety should take precedence over the cost or urgency of their journeys.
The FRSC Sector Commander said road safety was a collective responsibility and expressed optimism that sustained public awareness and cooperation among stakeholders would help reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities during the Ember Months and the forthcoming Yuletide celebrations.
