Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has been describe as a source of pride to teachers across Nigeria, saying his emergence as governor reflects the leadership values, discipline and sense of responsibility associated with the teaching profession.
The National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Titus Audu Amba, stated this when he received the Kebbi State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed and members of the state media team on a courtesy visit to the NUT National Secretariat.
In a statement issued to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yahaya Sarki in Birnin Kebbi, said the Governor had risen through the ranks of the teaching profession and the union, serving as Branch Chairman, Kebbi State Chairman of the NUT, National Treasurer, Vice President and National President of the Union, as well as Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
He recalled that the union had confidence in Governor Idris even before he assumed office because of his record as a teacher and labour leader as the Governor’s administration has transformed Kebbi State through investments in road infrastructure, education, healthcare, workers’ welfare, street lighting and other critical sectors.
The NUT President said teachers and union members who had visited Kebbi before and after Governor Idris assumed office could attest to the changes across the state and also commended the Governor’s hands-on approach and personal monitoring of development projects, saying many of the achievements were visible and verifiable.
Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed BK, said the visit was part of efforts by Kebbi Governor’s Media Aides to showcase Governor Idris’s achievements and attract greater national and international attention to the state’s economic, investment and development opportunities.
He said the administration had recorded significant interventions in education, healthcare, security, agriculture, workers’ welfare and solid minerals development.
The Commissioner explained that the establishment of the Ministry of Solid Minerals and the Kebbi State Solid Minerals Development Commission had created new investment opportunities, with companies from China, Indonesia, India and Brazil showing interest in the state’s mineral resources, including lithium.
He also highlighted the recruitment of teachers, construction and renovation of schools, payment of the new national minimum wage of ₦75,000, and the expansion and upgrading of healthcare facilities, adding that the visit also sought to strengthen the relationship between the Kebbi State Government and the NUT and promote collaboration on education and teachers’ welfare.
